Scientific studies show acupuncture as an effective treatment for chronic low back pain. A study at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in conjunction with 33 other acupuncture studies on low back pain show acupuncture’s promise for long term back pain relief.

Low back pain is the second biggest complaint doctors hear from their patients. Acupuncture may be a new solution to an old problem.

Conquering Chronic Pain

One in six Americans lives with chronic pain. Is pain the disease of the future, or can it be treated effectively? Acupuncture may help. Theories on how it work include:

  • Speeding the relay of electromagnetic signals. This may begin the flow of pain-killing chemicals such as endorphins. Or it may release immune system cells in the body.
  • Triggering the release of natural opioids. These are chemicals in the brain that may lessen pain or promote sleep.
  • Changing brain chemistry by altering the release of neurotransmitters and neurohormones. Neurotransmitters either stimulate or dampen nerve impulses. Neurohormones can affect the function or activity of an organ in the body.
