If you are one of the millions of Americans that experience Episodic Tension Headaches and Chronic Tension Headaches, acupuncture might be the solution for you.

Success Story

I have suffered with daily headaches and migraines since adolescence,. I am on numerous preventive medications along with Botox shots, Advil and my rescue meds. Anything and everything can trigger them, especially temperature changes. So at the advice of my primary doctor to try acupuncture, I started with Margaret at Inner Light Wellness about a month ago. And to be honest, my expectations weren’t high because of the years and all the medication that I have tried/ been on. WELL, after 1 week of treatments NO daily headaches. In the month that I have been getting treatments I’ve had 1 day that I’ve had to take only Tylenol, and 1 day of my rescue med. Now I’m getting up and saying, “hey I don’t have a headache this morning!” This hasn’t happened in years. I would recommend acupuncture to anyone. Wish I would have done it years ago. Margaret and Valerie are great and make you feel very comfortable.

How Does Acupuncture Treat Tension Headaches?

How Does Acupuncture Help Tension Headaches?

At Inner Light Wellness Acupuncture, we have effective, powerful acupuncture solutions for eliminating tension headaches. By providing pain relief, relaxing targeted muscles, and soothing the body’s stress response, our patients experience freedom from chronic tension headaches.  Acupuncture works in three different ways to address the cause and symptoms:

  • Pain relief via endorphin release
  • Relaxing tight cervical and trapezius muscles
  • Stress reduction via lowering cortisol

There are many different acupuncture styles. At Inner Light Wellness Acupuncture we utilize several types of acupuncture customized to each patient’s particular needs.

Dr. Tan’s Balance Method is often very effective for chronic tension headache. This technique is known for bringing significant pain relief by addressing imbalances in the acupuncture meridians. It involves acupuncture points at a distance from the point of pain. We don’t have to put needles into the head to correct a migraine. This is because there are points in different areas of your body that can influence the targeted area through the nervous system. Dr. Tan Balance Method points are usually located on the arms and legs.

A second approach is directly influencing the nervous system via electrical acupuncture. This method uses fewer needles and specialized devices that deliver a low level frequency to target neuropeptides such as serotonin, GABA, and CGRP. This is especially useful if your tension headaches are severe.

How Many Treatments Will I Need for my Tension Headaches?

At your first visit, we will go over your symptoms and health history to determine if you are a candidate for care. Then we will recommend a customized treatment plan with just the right combination of acupuncture therapies that work best for your unique tension headaches. You may receive treatment on your first visit.

Treatment frequency will vary based on your headache frequency, severity, and duration.  Most of our patients with tension headaches receive acupuncture twice a week for about six weeks. Once you are improving between the visits, we reduce the frequency until you are on once per month maintenance visits. Patients who follow this protocol achieve long lasting results with even the most chronic and stubborn migraines and headaches.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Most patients report improvement after several weeks of care. Remember, by the time you seek acupuncture, it’s likely your tension headaches have been with you for some time. Pain relief can depend on many variables such as the cause of your pain, your current health status, medications, diet and lifestyle. Rest assured, we see at least an 85% success rate for our patients receiving acupuncture for tension headaches.
