Migraine Headache Success Story

I have suffered most of my adult life with headaches that were treatable with OTC medications however, over the last year, I began suffering with debilitating migraines, chronic daily headaches and an array of related symptoms (brain fog, dizziness, etc). After months of trial and error on several treatment plans with various doctors, I scheduled an appointment with Margaret. I was skeptical at first as I saw minimal to no long term improvement from prescribed preventive medications, but was willing to give anything a shot to help me combat the chronic pain. At my first appointment, Margaret and her team were so welcoming. Margaret listened to all of my issues/concerns and developed a treatment plan specific to my needs. Over the next few weeks, I saw improvement in both the quantity and severity of my headaches. By the end of my treatment plan, I was completely headache and symptom free! I am currently on an acupuncture maintenance schedule and continue to remain headache free (and no longer on preventive medications). I am so happy to have my life back and so incredibly thankful for Margaret and her team! I HIGHLY recommend!

How Does Acupuncture Treat Migraines and Headaches?

Acupuncture works to restore healthy nerve communication and blood flow to the head. At Inner Light Wellness, we specialize in Neurological Acupuncture with a high success rate resolving migraine headaches.

How do we achieve this high success rate? By utilizing specific techniques that regulate neuropeptides such as CGRP and neurotransmitters such as serotonin.

CGRP (calcitonin gene-related peptide) is a neuropeptide, a small protein that transmits signals in the brain. Sensory nerves produce and release CGRP. CGRP plays a large role in the current theory of migraine. When a migraine starts, the trigeminal nerve releases CGRP. CGRP causes blood vessels in the head to swell, contributing to inflammation around the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter (a signaling molecule) that has also been shown to be a factor in migraines.

Medications have been developed to address these pro-inflammatory processes in migraines, some of which you may have already tried. Medications often have side effects and sometimes only reduce the number of migraines but don’t completely resolve the symptoms. The majority of our patients report complete resolution of symptoms  after a series of treatments and monthly maintenance. We would be happy to help you be migraine free too.

How Many Treatments Will I Need to Relieve My Migraine Headaches?

At your first visit, we will go over your symptoms and health history to determine if you are a candidate for care. Then we will recommend a customized treatment plan with just the right combination of acupuncture therapies that work best for your unique symptoms. You may receive treatment on your first visit.

Treatment frequency will vary based on the type of migraine you experience as well as its severity and frequency.  Most patients start with two to three visits per week for the first few weeks then move to two visits per week for several more weeks. Once you are improving between the visits, we reduce the frequency until you are on once per month maintenance visits. Patients who follow this protocol achieve long lasting results with even the most chronic and stubborn migraines and headaches.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Most patients report improvement after several weeks of care. Remember, your migraine pain has been with you for some time. Pain relief can depend on many variables such as the type of headache, the frequency, the severity, your current health, medications, diet and lifestyle. Rest assured, we see at least an 85% success rate for our patients receiving acupuncture for migraines and headaches.
